What to Wear on a Rainy Day

The best rainy-day outfit depends on more than whether the forecast shows a rain cloud. Temperature, wind, how heavily it rains and how long you'll be outside all affect what feels comfortable. The goal is to stay reasonably dry without overheating.

Quick rainy-day outfit: A breathable base layer, a hooded waterproof jacket, comfortable trousers and water-resistant shoes with good grip. Add a warm middle layer when it's cold; choose lighter clothing when it's warm and humid.

Three rainy-day outfits for different plans

1. Everyday commute

Pair a breathable T-shirt or long-sleeve top with comfortable trousers and a lightweight waterproof jacket. Choose closed-toe shoes that can handle wet pavement. If you're taking public transport, a compact umbrella can help, but a hooded jacket is useful when you need both hands free.

2. Work or school

Start with an outfit suitable for indoors, such as a shirt or blouse with trousers or a skirt, then add a rainproof outer layer for the journey. If the route is especially wet, consider wearing weather-resistant shoes outside and changing into your usual footwear indoors. A small bag for a damp umbrella can be handy.

3. Long walk or sightseeing

Wear a jacket with a dependable waterproof outer fabric and an adjustable hood. Pair it with comfortable, grippy footwear. For sustained rain, consider rain trousers or quick-drying bottoms; denim can remain damp and uncomfortable for a long time. Keep essentials in a water-resistant bag or protective pouch.

Waterproof or water-resistant: which do you need?

Water-resistant fabrics can cope with light showers for a limited time, but may eventually let water through. Waterproof jackets are designed to block rain more effectively; features such as sealed seams and a protective hood matter in prolonged downpours. Even a waterproof shell can feel clammy without ventilation, so breathable fabrics and adjustable openings are useful when walking quickly.

For a brief drizzle between buildings, a compact umbrella or light rain jacket may be enough. For hours outdoors in steady rain, a more protective jacket and suitable shoes are worth prioritizing.

What shoes should you wear in the rain?

Choose footwear based on the amount of rain and the ground you'll walk on, not just the temperature.

Be cautious on smooth tiles, painted road markings and other slippery surfaces. Waterproof footwear isn't automatically slip-resistant.

What to wear when it's raining and cold

On a cold rainy day, a waterproof outer shell works best with removable insulating layers. A long-sleeve base top and fleece or sweater under a rain jacket can provide warmth without relying on one heavy coat. Keep hands and feet dry, and consider a warm hat if the temperature is low. If the air feels colder because of wind, a wind-blocking shell is particularly helpful.

What to wear when it's raining and warm

Warm rain is different: a heavy coat may trap too much heat. Choose a lightweight, breathable rain shell or umbrella, along with airy clothing that dries comfortably. At around 20°C (68°F), you may only need a thin rain layer over a T-shirt or shirt. For warmer temperatures and high humidity, ventilation becomes especially important.

What changes when rain comes with strong wind?

Wind can blow rain sideways and make umbrellas awkward or unsafe to use in strong gusts. A well-fitting hooded rain jacket is often more practical. Secure loose layers, choose footwear with good grip and pay attention to local weather alerts. In severe storms or flooding, clothing alone won't make outdoor conditions safe; follow local safety guidance and avoid unnecessary travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear jeans on a rainy day?

Yes, especially for short trips in light rain. But denim absorbs moisture and can take a while to dry. If you're expecting heavy rain or a long walk, quicker-drying trousers may be more comfortable.

Do I need a raincoat if I have an umbrella?

Not always. An umbrella may be enough for a short, calm-weather trip. A raincoat is more useful when wind picks up, you need your hands free or you'll be outside for an extended period.

Are sneakers okay in the rain?

Some are, depending on their material, tread and the amount of rain. Thin mesh sneakers may soak through quickly. For persistent rain, water-resistant or waterproof footwear is a more reliable choice.

What should I wear in summer rain?

Try lightweight, breathable clothing with a thin rain shell or umbrella. Avoid piling on heavy insulating layers unless the temperature or wind actually calls for them.
